The Art

What Is No-Gi Grappling?

No-Gi is Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu trained in a rash guard and shorts instead of the traditional uniform. With no fabric to grip, the game speeds up and shifts toward body control, wrestling, and scrambles.

It is the format most closely related to MMA and to real-world self-defense, where nobody is wearing a gi. Athletes coming from wrestling, football, or other combat sports usually find No-Gi the most natural entry point into the art.

Most of our students train both. The Gi teaches patience and precision; No-Gi teaches speed and control. Both are included in every membership at no extra cost.

Underhooks, overhooks, and head position. The exchange that decides who ends up on top.

Keeping your guard without sleeve and collar grips — frames, hip movement, and timing.

“You won't find a school around here that offers better training. Most schools nowadays are just black belt farms — they hand out black belts like candy. GMA is definitely the real deal, and I'm glad that we are a part of it.”

Common Questions

No-Gi Grappling FAQ

No. You can start with either. Many students train both from the beginning — both are included in every membership.
A rash guard or fitted t-shirt and grappling shorts or leggings with no pockets, zippers, or drawstrings. Loose gym shorts are a hazard for fingers and toes.
It is faster, which makes it feel harder at first. But without grips there is less to memorise early on, so a lot of beginners find No-Gi more intuitive to start.
They are taught progressively and with clear rules about who may use what in live training. Safety comes first — leg entanglements are introduced once you have the control and awareness to train them without injury.
Yes, teens 14 and up train in the adult classes. Younger students should start in Kids Jiu Jitsu.
