The Art

What Is Brazilian Jiu Jitsu?

Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu is a grappling art built around ground fighting, submissions, and positional control. It was developed by the Gracie family in Brazil to let a smaller, weaker person defend against a larger opponent using leverage and technique instead of strength.

It has since proven itself as the most effective ground-fighting system in the world — the backbone of modern MMA and a cornerstone of military and law enforcement combatives. But most people stay for what happens off the mat: the problem-solving, the conditioning, and the training partners.

Adult members also get free access to the weight room and online curriculum videos in the student portal for every level.

Authentic Gracie Lineage: GMA is a branch academy of the Rocian Gracie Jr. organization, and our classes teach his method — passed down from his grandfather Carlos Gracie, the founder of Gracie Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, and his father Rocian Gracie Sr. Master Rocian and Professor Spillmann grew up together and have worked side by side for over 30 years. Professor Spillmann received his Black Belt from Master Rocian on December 12, 2001, and classes here are taught by Professor Spillmann, his sons and his grandsons.

Curriculum

What You’ll Learn

A complete grappling education — from fundamental positions to advanced submissions.

Guard & Defense

Control and attack from your back using closed, open, half, and butterfly guard. Turn a defensive position into an offensive weapon.

Takedowns & Throws

Bring the fight to the ground on your terms. Single-legs, double-legs, trips, and hip throws adapted for BJJ and self-defense.

Submissions

Chokes, joint locks, and sweeps — the tools that end a confrontation. Armbars, triangles, kimuras, guillotines and dozens more.

Guard Passing

Systematically dismantle your opponent's guard and establish dominant position. Pressure passing, speed passing, and everything between.

Escapes & Survival

The foundation everything else is built on. Get out from under mount, side control, and back control calmly and efficiently.

Positional Sparring

Live training from specific positions so you get dozens of focused repetitions instead of one long scramble.

“You won't find a school around here that offers better training. Most schools nowadays are just black belt farms — they hand out black belts like candy. GMA is definitely the real deal, and I'm glad that we are a part of it.”

Common Questions

Adult Gi Jiu-Jitsu FAQ

No. Most people who walk through our door have never trained before. Every class starts with a warm-up and technique, and an instructor will pair you with someone who can guide you. Your first class is free, so you can try it before committing to anything.
No — Jiu-Jitsu is how you get in shape. Classes are self-paced, you can tap or sit out a round at any time, and the conditioning comes from showing up consistently rather than from arriving fit.
In Gi Jiu-Jitsu you wear the traditional uniform and can grip the fabric, which rewards patience and precise technique. No-Gi is trained in a rash guard and shorts, moves faster, and leans on body control and wrestling. Most students train both — they reinforce each other, and both are included in every plan.
GMA is a branch academy of the Rocian Gracie Jr. organization and teaches his method. Professor Spillmann received his Black Belt directly from Master Rocian Gracie Jr., grandson of Carlos Gracie, the founder of the art. The curriculum and standards come from that source rather than from a generic syllabus.
Typically around two years of consistent training, though it depends entirely on how often you train and how quickly the fundamentals click. Each belt carries four stripes earned along the way, so progress is visible well before the next belt.
Comfortable athletic clothes with no zippers, buttons, or pockets. We will lend you a gi for your trial. Bring a water bottle, trim your nails, and expect to train barefoot.
Two to three classes a week is the sweet spot — often enough to build real skill, spaced enough to recover. We run morning Open Gym and evening classes so you can fit training around work.
