The Art

What Is Kids Brazilian Jiu Jitsu?

Kids Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu is grappling — no striking, no punching, no kicking. Children learn to control a bigger, stronger opponent using leverage, position, and technique, which makes it one of the safest martial arts for young students and one of the most useful in a real situation.

Our youth classes teach the Rocian Gracie Jr. method, the same system passed down from Carlos Gracie, the founder of Gracie Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, and Rocian Gracie Sr. Classes are grouped by age and size, and every live round is supervised.

Beyond the mat, parents tell us the change shows up at home and at school — better focus, more patience, and the quiet confidence that comes from knowing you can handle yourself.

What You’ll Learn

A complete, age-appropriate grappling education built on the Gracie system.

Positional Control

Mount, side control, back control, and guard — how to get to a dominant position and keep it.

Escapes & Defense

The first thing every child learns: how to stay safe and get out from underneath a bigger opponent.

Age-Appropriate Submissions

Chokes and joint locks taught progressively, with strict rules about which techniques are allowed at which age.

Takedowns & Falling

How to take an opponent down safely — and just as importantly, how to fall without getting hurt.

Drilling & Games

Repetition disguised as play. Movement games build coordination, timing, and mat awareness.

Respect & Mat Etiquette

Bowing in, listening, training safely with partners. The discipline side of the art carries off the mat.

“You won't find a school around here that offers better training. Most schools nowadays are just black belt farms — they hand out black belts like candy. GMA is definitely the real deal, and I'm glad that we are a part of it.”

Common Questions

Kids Jiu Jitsu FAQ

Our Kids Jiu Jitsu classes run for ages 6–12. Younger children can start in the Little Lions program at our main Global Martial Arts USA location, and teens 14 and up train in the adult Gi classes.
It is one of the safer martial arts for children precisely because there is no striking. Kids grapple, and every live round is supervised. Classes are grouped by age and size, our instructors are Safe Sport Certified and background-checked, and dangerous submissions are restricted by age under IBJJF rules.
The opposite, in our experience. Children who know they can handle themselves have far less to prove. The class structure — bowing in, listening, controlled training — reinforces discipline, not aggression.
It helps in two ways. The physical skills let a child control a situation without hurting anyone, which is what parents and schools actually want. And the confidence that comes with competence often stops the problem before it becomes physical.
Comfortable athletic clothes with no zippers or buttons, and a water bottle. We will lend a gi for the trial class. Nails trimmed, no jewellery, and training is barefoot.
Two classes a week is the sweet spot for most kids — enough to build real skill without burning out. Our Kids Jiu Jitsu runs Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday and Friday afternoons.
Only if they want to. Competition is completely optional. Kids who are interested can train with the Fight Team and enter IBJJF and local tournaments; plenty of students train for years and never compete.
