BJJ Gi for Beginners

At ARGBJJ academies blue gi's are for white belts, and black gis are for Blue Belts and Higher. Professors where Black Gi's with red stitching. Students wear school uniforms for school/team consistency, with all patches. Some competition organizations also have their own requirements, this is why our Gi's are used at our schools. You can also purchase a ARGBJJ organization gi's directly from Brazil. A professional enviroment with required standards are part of our Jiu-Jitsu academy.

This is especially helpful for families with children in martial arts. A uniform is part of learning responsibility, manners, and readiness. When every student arrives in a clean, properly fitted gi, it helps create the focused training environment everyone deserves.

At Academia Rocian Gracie Jr Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu USA TN Branch, students are encouraged to ask before purchasing equipment. A simple question can prevent spending money on a gi that is the wrong color, too large, or unsuitable for the program, the same goes for any sparring gear and gloves.

Fit Matters More Than the Logo

A beginner should be able to bend, squat, reach overhead, sit, and move through basic grappling positions without the gi pulling tightly across the shoulders, hips, or knees. The jacket should cover the torso and allow the sleeves to reach close to the wrists. Pants should reach near the ankles without dragging under the feet.

Account for Shrinkage Before Training

Many cotton gis shrink, particularly when washed hot or dried on high heat. Some are labeled pre-shrunk, but that does not mean they will never change size. Read the care instructions before the first wash. Hang drying or low heat is the best.

If the gi fits perfectly when brand new, use cooler water and hang it to dry whenever possible. If it is slightly roomy, a careful warm wash and brief low-heat drying cycle may bring it into a better range. Do not guess repeatedly. Too much heat can turn a well-fitting gi into one that is uncomfortable or no longer allowed for training.

Choose a Practical Weave and Weight

The jacket fabric is commonly described by its weave. Beginners do not need to memorize every fabric term, but understanding the basics helps you buy wisely.

For most new students, a quality pearl-weave jacket with reinforced cotton pants is a sensible first gi. It is sturdy enough for regular classes without feeling like armor. If you train several times each week, a lighter gi may also be useful as a second uniform because it dries faster between sessions.

Our Gi's have reinforced knees and strong stitching around the seat and crotch. Beginners spend plenty of time kneeling, shrimping, drilling takedown entries, and working from the ground. Thin pants tend to show wear there first.

Color, Style, and Patches Can Wait

For children, a basic uniform can also reduce pressure. Young students do not need to feel that their equipment has to look impressive. Their confidence should come from learning how to listen, practice, persevere, and treat partners well.

The most useful buying checklist is straightforward:

  • Use the size chart, then consider body shape and expected shrinkage.

  • Choose a durable midweight gi rather than an ultra-cheap or overly heavy option.

  • Wash the gi after every class and keep a second one when training becomes consistent.

Care Is Part of Respect for Your Training Partners

A clean gi is not just about appearance. It protects the health and comfort of everyone on the mat. Wash it promptly after every class, even if the session felt light. Letting a sweaty gi sit in a closed bag creates odor and bacteria that are difficult to remove later.

Use regular detergent, follow the garment instructions, and let the uniform dry completely before packing it away. Keep fingernails and toenails trimmed as well. These are small habits, but they show self-control and consideration for training partners.

Parents can make gi care part of a child’s routine. Hanging up the uniform, placing it in the wash, and packing it for the next class teach responsibility alongside martial arts technique.

Your First ARGBJJ Gi Is a Training Tool

The best uniform will not replace patient instruction, regular attendance, or a respectful attitude. It can, however, remove distractions and help a beginner walk onto the mat prepared. Choose a gi that fits, follow your academy’s standards, keep it clean, and give yourself permission to learn before worrying about advanced gear.

A well-chosen first gi is a quiet commitment: you are ready to practice, ready to improve, and ready to be a dependable training partner.
